Description

Understanding Attachment Disorders in Children & Carers

Attachment is a powerful force that creates a deep emotional connection between people, transcending time and distance. It is profoundlysignificant in the relationship between infants and caregivers, as it plays a crucial role in helping infants meet their primary needs.

Recognising and understanding our attachment patterns is vital to providing young people with supportive relationships. Research indicates that 40% of adults exhibit a reactive attachment pattern, making identifying and addressing attachment disorders through therapeutic parenting essential. The attachment experience impacts personality development and our ability to form stable relationships throughout our lives.

This course look at the fundamental principles of attachment in interpersonal relationships, emphasising how an awareness of adult attachment patterns can prevent inhibited care. Positive attachment in infancy establishes the groundwork for all other coping mechanisms, fostering a child's ability to separate from their caregiver and thrive. Neuroscientists have acknowledged the primal importance of attachment, as the brain contains dedicated networks of neurons for this purpose.

Learning Aims:

  1. Understand the fundamental principles of attachment and bonding, which are critical for healthy development.
  2. Understand how healthy attachment is facilitated.
  3. Understand how neglect and abuse negatively influence attachment, exploring the consequent challenging behaviours.
  4. Understand how carers can help children with attachment difficulties.
  5. Understand how attachment affects adult relationships.
  6. To know how we assess our attachment patterns.
  7. Understand the possible attachment pattern we may have developed.
  8. Understand the impact of "blocked care."
  9. Develop an understanding of how attachments attachment patterns can be altered.
